Your Application Process, Visa & Residence Guide

Applying to a university in Germany can feel complex at first, especially if you also need to plan your visa, finances, accommodation, and arrival. This page helps international applicants understand the process step by step. Find out which documents you need, how admission works, what to consider for your visa, and how DIU supports you before and after your application.

Application Process

Step 1: Send Your Documents by E-Mail
Submit your application and all required documents for your chosen degree program.

Step 2: Academic Review
DIU checks whether your documents are complete and whether you meet the academic and formal admission requirements.

Step 3: Pre-Contract Consultation
If you are academically qualified, you are invited to a conversation that explains the next steps, including how the study contract works in Germany.

Step 4: Receive, Sign, and Return Your Contract
You receive your study contract, sign it, and complete the first required payment.

Step 5: Admission Letter and Visa Preparation
After the required payment step is completed, you receive the documents needed for the next administrative stage. For embassy appointments, applicants usually need university documents plus proof of payment and proof of financial means.

Plan Earlier Than You Think

If you want to start in the autumn intake, prepare your application as early as possible before summer. Embassy waiting times and financial proof requirements can become the biggest delay factors.

For On-Campus Study in Germany

Your visa preparation should begin as soon as your study path becomes concrete. The most important point is timing: university admission, contract process, payment proofs, and embassy appointment all need to align.

  • Book your embassy appointment as early as possible
  • Make sure all DIU documents are complete before the appointment
  • Prepare your financial proof in full, not at the last minute

Important Note on Financial Proof

Depending on the visa pathway, embassy procedures may require proof that the first academic year has already been financed, in addition to proof of personal living funds for the following period.
This is exactly why applicants should not treat visa preparation as a final step. It is part of the application strategy from the beginning.

Accommodation

Many international students begin with a practical temporary or student-friendly option first, then look for a long-term solution after arrival.

  • Start your search early
  • Prioritize reliable first accommodation over the “perfect” apartment
  • Keep your monthly budget realistic for Dresden

DIU’s Student Service Center supports international students with accommodation-related questions and helps them better understand the practical steps involved.

  • Guidance on student housing and accommodation search
  • Support with first orientation after arrival
  • Help with related administrative questions
