Before Studies: Preparing for Your Academic Journey
Starting your studies abroad requires careful preparation. Here’s what you should do before your arrival in Germany:
Application and Admission
- Ensure all required documents are submitted according to your program’s guidelines.
- Review your study and examination regulations, including module descriptions, which are provided with your contract or welcome email. These contain all important rules and requirements for your studies.
Planning Your Stay in Germany
- Find accommodation and secure a lease contract.
- Research German health insurance options – mandatory for all students.
- Learn basic German, as language proficiency is often required for your studies and daily life.
Financial Planning and Scholarships

Prepare for living expenses, including rent, transport, and study materials.
During Studies: Settling In and Studying Successfully
Once you arrive in Germany, there are several administrative and practical steps to follow:
Administrative Essentials
- Official Registration: Register at the Bürgerbüro (Theaterstraße 11, 01067 Dresden).
- Residence Permit: Book an appointment at the Foreigners’ Registration Office to secure your residence permit. Make sure the appointment is set at least 90 days before your Visa ends.
- Bank Account: Open a German bank account of your choice.
- Health Insurance: Ensure you have a valid German health insurance contract that is activated.
- Mobile Number: Obtain a German mobile number and provide it to the International Office.
Student ID and Enrolment
- Collect your student ID card at your first classroom event.
- Request an enrolment certificate from the Student Service Center as needed: studentservicecenter@di-uni.de
Academic Focus
- Your studies are always your priority, especially in the first two semesters.
- All students receive module descriptions and credit points information (e.g., Credit Points: 90 ECTS).
Student Jobs
- In genereal it depends on your Visa what kind of studtend job is valid for your stay.
- Usually you can work up to 20 hours per week as a student.
- Use free platforms to find jobs, e.g., StepStone, LinkedIn, Indeed, Joblift, Jobworld.

Language Skills
- The programs at DIU are taught entirely in English.
- German is more important for life outside of school, and of course for part-time jobs and the like.
- Most of the degree programs at DIU include a required German course.
